For most people, Furniture includes those sofas, beds and tables that we can see in our own houses. However, do you know that in technical terms, that kind of definition is incorrect? I have said this because there are actually at least two distinct definitions of the word furniture, which we will elaborate and give examples below.

On the one hand, the most popular and I think the most common definition as well of furniture refers to the different objects that we can see in our houses or buildings that are made in order to make the lives of the people more comfortable and suitable. Some of these include the built-in furniture, folding screen, headboard, clothes and valet and many more.

I think the best example for this definition is the built-in furniture. This includes different kinds of cabinet that are being used for several purposes. For example, there are some cabinets that are specifically being utilized in storing different materials like kitchenware as well as clothes, shoes, apparels, personal stuff and many more. Most cabinets commonly have sliding windows, doors or drawers that serve as the lock. These are essential in order for the dust to not pass through inside.

Another best example for this definition is the headboard. This headboard furniture is a specific and special kind of furniture that complements the usage of the bed. Well, this is the most common application of the headboard that is why I have mentioned about that.

Furthermore, radiogram is another type of furniture that combines that valve radio and the record player. This form is actually very popular during the 1900s, but unfortunately becoming obsolete already.

On the other hand, the second definition that I know has something to do with the accessories that are required for specific and particular function as well as setting and situation. Some of these that we can name include the aquarium furniture, door furniture, hutch, street furniture as well as park furniture and stadium furniture.

A good example that I could give about this definition is the park furniture. This type includes the benches that you see as well as several picnic tables that you can use in major parks. For example, there are specific kinds of bed furniture that vary on the kind of materials used as their filling. The most common is made from foam and spring. However, we now have waterbed, which is filled by water and airbed, which is filled with air rather than other kinds of materials. The major advantage of the last two that I have mentioned is that they go to the shape of the user, which gives more convenient sleeping experience.

 

There are also some kinds of beds that vary on the size. For example, the single and twin bed is the most common type of this, which means the bed can only be occupied by a single or at most two persons, depending on the size of their body and weight. There are also what they call as the queen and king-sized bed, which are beds with use space. These are also being used by at most tow people.

 

On the other hand, the headboard is the second type of sleeping and lying furniture that I know. It is distinct furniture because it is separate from the bed. Its primary purpose, however, complements the use and looks of the bed. I have said this because it is commonly a piece of wood that is usually placed at the head part of the bed in order to support the back of the users whenever he or she sits in the bed in order to read or even just sit while the legs are resting.

 

The last type of sleeping or lying furniture is the futon. This has its origin in Japan. This is actually like a bed, but specifically looks like a thick comforter or sleeping bag.

Just because you have the money to buy furniture, it does not mean that you can just buy anything that you want to. This is because you need to consider several aspects when purchasing new furniture. What you need to do here is to not necessarily pick up the cheapest one. Instead, what you actually need to do is just to make sure that the money you are going to spend is just matched to what you are buying.

 

On the other hand, you must also consider the built of the furniture that you are going to buy. For example is the size of the sofa bed that you want. In this light, you have to consider the space you have in your house. If you have a big space, then I don’t think that you will have any problem. However, if you are living in a small apartment, then you need to think of something that is more practical considering the space you have.

 

Aside from that, you can also think of the built of the furniture in terms of the materials they are made from. For example, if you will use that most of the time, make sure that the materials used to make it are highly reliable and durable to withstand its capacity.

 

Thirdly, you need to consider the functionality of the furniture. You have to inculcate in your mind that you have to use that furniture and not just make it as among your decorations in the house. Otherwise, it would be just impractical for you to buy such if it has no explicit function for you.

 

Last, but not the least, is the quality of the furniture you are intending to buy. You make to ensure that you have paid what you bought for and not just second-rated furniture that will only last for couple years.

Classification of Furniture According to Materials

One of the major classifications of furniture is according to the materials that were used to make them. In this light, there are actually at least six (6) classes that we can name here. These are the sets of furniture made from wooden, bamboo, wicker or rattan, plastics as well as metal and glasses. We will be discussing all of these six classes in the section below.

 

The most common built of furniture is made from wood. I have said this because when the furniture has been created, those were mainly made from different kinds of wood. The third class on our list is the furniture made from metals. This type is actually becoming more and more popular in the recent years since they are commonly lighter than the wooden and the bamboo furniture. Of course, they are highly durable as well. Aside from that, there are also so many designs and styles of these metal forms of furniture. The advantage of this is that it can also be used outdoors, most especially under the extreme exposure from the sun. However, they are not advisable to be kept under the rain because they will eventually rust if you will do that.

 

Fourthly, glass furniture is the most elite kind on our list. I have said this because aside from the sophisticated looks and designs of these items, the primary materials used are expensive as well. Furthermore, it is not also widely available, which makes its price a bit more expensive. Like the first three that I have mentioned, this type is also durable, but extremely fragile.

 

Last, but not the least, is the wicker or the rattan furniture. This is just like the bamboo furniture but specifically made from rattan and different kinds of wood. This is commonly made from light wood.
